Engaging Male Youth in Karamoja, Uganda

insecurity

This report presents new data on insecurity and changing livelihoods from the perspective of male youth in southern Karamoja, Uganda, and includes an evaluation of a pilot communication and relationship intervention to mitigate propensity for violence and criminal behavior as committed by young men. The findings point to potentially promising impacts of the intervention on interpersonal and domestic violence while highlighting important considerations for targeting the most at-risk youth. The mixed methods approach allows for an in-depth analysis of how crime and violence is changing in Karamoja and why specific young men are—or are not—engaged in this behavior. The report ends with recommendations for a wide variety of stakeholders looking to improve policies or programs in the region.

This report was done in collaboration with the Learning on Gender and Conflict in Africa  (LOGiCA) Program of the World Bank.
