Dan Maxwell publishes in International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction

Dan Maxwell and Erin Lentz published their article, “How do information problems constrain anticipating, mitigating, and responding to crises?” in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction Volume 81, 15 October 2022, 103242.

Synthesizing interviews with humanitarian practitioners, donors, analysts, and researchers and analyses of early warning (EW) information systems and their linkages to Anticipatory Action (AA), the authors describe six information challenges within the current system:

  1. abundant but confusing information,
  2. the difficulty of predicting conflict,
  3. politicized information,
  4. limitations of new analytical tools,
  5. varying information needs, and
  6. limited data sharing.

The authors then then propose an approach to improve the timeliness and appropriateness of action for humanitarian crises and disasters.

This article relates to the Humanitarian Information Systems project, led by Dan Maxwell.
