Dan Maxwell and Famine Review Committee Activated on Somalia

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Famine Review Committee was activated on August 5, 2022 by a request from the IPC Somalia Technical Working Group. The Committee was asked to review the situation in the rural areas of Baidoa and Burhakaba districts in the Bay region and for the newly arrived internally displaced persons in Baidoa settlements.

On September 1, the Committee, including Dan Maxwell, concluded their review. The findings are alarming. The Committee agreed with the IPC Somalia Technical Working Group’s preliminary classifications:

  • Emergency (IPC Phase 4) for the current period (August – September 2022)
  • Famine Likely (IPC Phase 5) for the projected period (October – December 2022) for Baidoa and Burhakaba districts (rural) and the newly arrived IDPs in Baidoa settlements
