The New York Times article, “Court Ruling Halts Deportation of Asylum Seekers From Britain to Rwanda” quoted Evan Easton-Calabria on June 14, 2022. The article describes reactions to the European Court of Human Rights ruling by the British and Rwandan governments and the international community.

Evan explains that the British plan to deport people seeking asylum within its borders to Rwanda carries many risks. The plan could  legitimize Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s authoritarian streak, despite the British government criticizing his human rights record in 2021. The plan also risks the safety of the asylum seekers since refugees had faced arrests, threats and killings in Rwanda in the past.
