Headshot of Birhan Gebrekirstos Mezgbo

Birhan Gebrekirstos Mezgbo is a dedicated humanitarian and advocate for the rights of women and girls, particularly those affected by conflict-based sexual violence.

In June 2024, she founded FETLI CSO to support survivors, especially those impacted by the Tigray war. Birhan has led initiatives like the “She Heals, We Heal” project, funded by DW Akademie, which empowers young women and girls affected by war and displacement. A significant aspect of this project is FETLI radio, a community program that provides vital information on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

She played a key role in documenting sexual violence during the Tigray war and co-authored the book “Mekanit” (“Tearing the Body, Breaking the Spirit”), with proceeds supporting victims. Additionally, she has  published articles focused on conflict-based sexual violence in Tigray.

Birhan’s commitment to justice extends beyond Tigray. As a DW Akademie fellow and a Master’s student in Humanitarian Assistance at Tufts University, she aims to create sustainable solutions for victims of conflict. Her experience as a lecturer at Mekelle University, combined with her humanitarian work, positions her as a strong advocate for the rights of women and girls affected by violence.
