Merry Fitzpatrick addresses Hurricane Helene response
When Hurricane Helene struck Asheville, North Carolina, Feinstein Research Assistant Professor Merry Fitzpatrick experienced the devastation firsthand.
As a humanitarian researcher and former full-time humanitarian worker, Fitzpatrick drew parallels between her experiences and observations in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and her understanding of international humanitarian response.
Using a $10,000 Tufts Springboard grant, Fitzpatrick now aims to interview Asheville locals, government officials, and community organizations about their experiences during and after the storm.
She hopes this study will enhance both domestic and international disaster responses by examining local needs, community support, and gaps in disaster planning and communication.
Fitzpatrick’s work seeks to not only inform disaster plans going forward, but also document this historic event for future reflection and learning.
