Solving big problems, globally: one alum’s journey from Afghanistan to Oxfam

Ahmad Shakeb spent nearly a decade working with major humanitarian organizations in Afghanistan, including the World Food Programme, USAID, and international NGOs.

Despite this strong practical background, he sought deeper theoretical grounding, broader international exposure, and a more analytical understanding of the forces shaping humanitarian action.

After researching leading programs, he chose the accelerated master’s degree program specializing in humanitarian assistance offered by The Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University.

Shakeb valued the program’s flexibility, cross-registration between the Friedman School and The Fletcher School, and exposure to diverse students and faculty. The experience broadened his expertise to include politics, policy, economics, and diplomacy.

Today, he applies this broader lens as a humanitarian funding and finance officer at Oxfam America. Shakeb credits the program with boosting his confidence, strengthening his contributions within the UN environment, and connecting him to a lasting professional network.
