Cholera cases surge in Africa

Cholera is surging across Africa, with more than 230,000 cases and nearly 5,000 deaths this year across 23 countries.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization have launched an emergency plan and presidential task force to scale up treatment centers and vaccines, aiming to eliminate cholera by 2030.

An NPR article quotes Feinstein Research Professor Daniele Lantagne on how conflict fuels cholera outbreaks by causing the collapse of infrastructure and contaminating water supplies.

In addition to conflict, poverty and climate disasters can also force communities to rely on unsafe sources.

Experts emphasize that vaccination, safe water, and good sanitation are key to preventing cholera outbreaks.
